Summary of Email from David Wilson on June 26, 2020 to SC Territory Managers.

For Agents with a Dovetail appointment: MetLife CL via Dovetail will start non-renewing policies on 7/1/2020.  Agents who accessed MetLife CL via Smart Start Commercial will be contacted by Lynn and her team.

  • Policies beginning with BP are BOP, and those beginning with CA are Auto.
  • For monoline CL Auto, we have a couple options with NatGen.  I hope you have been appointing your agents with these partners!
  • There will probably be some price shock, as MetLife CA was underpriced in most markets.

Agents should review all of their MetLife CL policies and plan to rewrite them.

I’ve been asked if we are doing anything to package all of the great things MetLife continues to do for its agents, customers, employees and the community a whole amid this pandemic. I’ve compiled below a few of the great things MetLife has done over the last month and hyperlinked them with any appropriate press release on our site. I’m going to see if we can get a graphic made detailing all of this. We are exploring having a video created as well. Please keep in mind a notice will be sent directly to your agents, and to customers, detailing the 15% credit announcement when it is available. It is my understanding that some of the FAQ’s are still being ironed out.

Below are some of the great things MetLife has done during this pandemic:

  • Active MetLife Auto customers who are paid to date will receive a 15% credit for April and May based on their monthly premiums. More here.
  • To help small businesses weather the economic fall-out and immediate challenges of COVID-19, MetLife is offering several resources to both small business owners and their employeesMore here.
  • MetLife will offer free housing at the Intercontinental Times Square for nurses, doctors and other medical workers effective immediately. More here.
  • MetLife Foundation is committing $25 million to the global response to COVID-19 in support of communities impacted by the pandemic. The grant funding from MetLife Foundation will span all regions where MetLife operates, and will address both short- and longer-term relief efforts. More here.

  • We recently donated 1,000 face masks to the New York State Department of Health. MetLife’s facilities team is meeting daily to manage all aspects of the company’s preparedness program, including its own inventory of supplies. Based on its review, and after accounting for supplies to stock our sites and equip our staff, the team identified 4,000 additional face masks, 1,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and 1,000 canisters of disinfecting wipes that will be donated. Another 16,000 face masks, currently on order, have also been earmarked for donation.

No doubt you’ve heard about the President’s statement on Business Interruption Insurance.  We heard it too.  Please know that our national association is contacting the administration as we speak and is working on coordinating a response with the heads of government affairs for insurance company trade associations.

It’s very likely you will hear from clients.

As you all know, virtually every BI policy excludes pandemics/virus’s. Forcing the industry to cover losses they never charged for would be a catastrophe for our industry:

  • Closure losses just for the small businesses with 100 or fewer employees has increased from $255 billion to $431 billion per month.
  • The national estimate rises to about $900 billion per month if the threshold is raised to 500 employees.
  • In contrast, the P&C industry’s total surplus – which exists to pay covered automobile, home, and business losses – is only $812.2 billion (as of 9/30/2019).
  • Industry estimates are that only 40% of all businesses had any form of business interruption coverage, and only 30% of small businesses have it.  So, even if such a proposal were to pass, it would only benefit a minority of businesses affected by the pandemic and mandated closures.
  • Recent legislative proposals in other states – with retroactive applications – are likely unconstitutional.

While our national association is working to address this issue nationally, IIAV will be implementing an aggressive PR campaign to get our message out.

COVID-19 Update

To Our U.S. Agents and Brokers:

We know that many of our customers are doing their part to help stop the spread of COVID-19 by staying at home. That means many of them are driving fewer miles, resulting in a decrease in auto claims.

With that in mind, we have launched the Stay-at-Home Auto Premium Credit Program, which will automatically give U.S. personal auto insurance customers a 15% credit on their April and May premiums. It’s our way of supporting our customers, and we hope it helps ease some of the financial burden many are experiencing. Please note that these credits will have no impact on the base commission associated with the policy.

We will continue to assess the program as more information comes to light about the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the driving environment and auto claims.

Customers who pay by monthly installments will receive the automatic credit on future bills. Customers who have already paid their billing account in full will receive a direct payment. We are working with regulators to obtain all the necessary approvals.

Separately, we continue to provide auto coverage for customers across the country whose job responsibilities now include using their personal vehicles to make food, grocery, pharmacy and medical supply deliveries. (This does not apply to those who are working for transportation network companies.)

The Stay-at-Home Auto Premium Credit Program is among several initiatives we have launched to provide relief during this challenging time. These include suspending cancellation and nonrenewal of coverage through May 15 – there will be no interest, late fees or penalties charged during this time. We are also accelerating more than $100 million of commission payments to eligible agents and brokers. And we have pledged $5 million to COVID-19 relief efforts to assist families and communities across North America, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

NOTE:  As of April 2, 2020 Safeco had  reduced Auto Rates in Virginia 8%!

Taking care of our customers, employees and agents is a top priority for Safeco. We recognize the uncertainty and financial challenges many of our joint customers are facing as the nation bands together to slow the spread of the coronavirus. To help Safeco customers, we have taken the following actions:

Personal Auto Customer Relief Refund   Fewer drivers are on the road, which means fewer accidents. With this in mind, we are announcing our Personal Auto Customer Relief Refund, which will return approximately $250 million to our Liberty Mutual personal lines and Safeco auto customers. Here’s how it works:

Personal auto insurance customers will receive a 15% refund of two months of their annual auto premium as of April 7, 2020, pending regulatory approval.  The refunds will begin in April and will be issued either by check or in the manner the customer made their most recent payment.

The payments will happen automatically. Customers do not need to call Safeco to receive the refund.  Safeco agent commissions WILL NOT be affected by this 15% customer refund.

 Payment flexibility options

Late fee charges have been automatically stopped and cancellations due to non-payment have been temporarily paused for personal auto and home customers from March 23 through at least May 22, 2020.

We continue to work with individual customers to extend payment dates if needed and provide personalized support.   Delivery coverage expansion for auto policies

All personal auto policies have been expanded to cover customers who use their personal vehicles to deliver food and medicine.  Standard Safeco personal auto policies typically exclude such coverage.

This additional protection is in effect for all personal auto policies in all states for losses occurring from March 16 to May 22, 2020, and reported by July 1, 2020.

We are now writing Farm in Smart Start!

The markets we are currently working with are Liberty Mutual (eligible states attached) and Nationwide. We will likely fold in State Auto once we get an understanding of what our flow looks like, but all signs point to Farm being a rather large industry segment for Smart Start.

We have already sent a marketing piece out regarding Nationwide Farm in Smart Start and received a high volume of submissions. We will be also loading the classes and carriers eligible for Farm in the business center so that the agents can generate leads. We want to drive the agents to the Business Center because Liberty Mutual will eventually be able to use their Sales Center to sell Farm in most states.

The primary benefits of this bill for small businesses, including insurance agencies, are:

Main Street America Issues Guidance for Personal Auto Insureds Providing Temporary Food Delivery Service

The Main Street America Group recognizes the unique burden being placed on individuals, families and businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this difficult time, we understand that in order to sustain operations, some businesses are considering food delivery by their employees. Although  coverage for food delivery is currently excluded in our Personal Lines contract, please know that we will temporarily waive enforcement of the Business Use exclusions to provide applicable coverage
for claims involving food delivery by our insureds in their listed Private Passenger Auto. This temporary expansion of coverage is different than a state mandate. State mandates supersede any
of Main Street America’s temporary actions.

For losses occurring between Monday, March 23, 2020 through Monday, April 20, 2020  temporary coverage is extended under the following conditions:

• Enforcement of the Personal Auto policy Business Use exclusion is waived if a loss occurs
while an eligible, listed operator is delivering food with their personal vehicle for their
employer.
• Please note that Transportation Network Coverage (i.e., Uber, Lyft, GrubHub, etc.) continues
to be excluded under the contract.
• This waiver does not apply if the listed operator or the employer has other valid and
collectible insurance which covers the loss.
• A waiver will not be provided for temporary replacement vehicles (i.e., rental cars, any
borrowed vehicles, etc.).
• Upon a claim report, a claims investigation will determine coverage; an investigation could
include verification of pay stubs or hours worked.

Please note it is not our intent to provide full-time or permanent Business Use coverage for food  delivery, but we are taking this position to help our valued insureds in this time of need. We will re-evaluate our position as this situation evolves.

Update on Payment Options for Coronavirus Hardships
To help meet the needs of our customers, from now through April 30, 2020, The Main Street America Group is accepting requests for extending payment due dates 60 days from the date requested. This applies to all direct bill policyholders who have been financially impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19). This revision replaces the 30-day extension period communicated in a prior notice.
This means, if requested and approved, premium payments currently due and all associated billing will be suspended for 60 days (state mandates will take precedent and we will comply with those in lieu of this exception policy). Policies granted extensions will not cancel for non-payment. Please note premiums are not being waived and will be due in future policy installments.
Request Process
To make a request, please instruct your insured to fill out the following form:   https://www.msagroup.com/payment-suspension-request
You also have the option of filling out the form on your insured’s behalf or sending an email to customer@msagroup.com with the following information: insured name, billing account number and policy number. The subject line should be “Payment Leniency Request.” The email address noted above is for agent use only and should not be shared with policyholders.
If a 30-day request has previously been submitted for your insured, it will automatically be changed to a 60-day payment extension.
Important Note: This deferment does not represent a period of free coverage. The payment and billing cycle will begin again at the end of the deferment period. Insureds are required to pay the full amount due on their policies by the end of the policy term.
